God’s Decree Gives Comfort
For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. John 5:4
God’s decree is unchangeable, therefore gives comfort to His church. “For I am the Lord, I change not” (Malachi 3:6). Concerning God’s providence toward His church, we are ready to argue with God’s providence if everything in life does not agree with our own desires. Remember, God’s work goes on, and nothing falls out except what He has decreed from eternity. God has decreed troubles for the church’s good. The trouble in God’s church is like the angels troubling the water, which made way for healing His people. God has decreed troubles in the church. His “fire is in Zion, and his furnace in Jerusalem” (Isaiah 31:9). The wheels in a watch move over one another, but they all carry on the motion of the watch; so the wheels of providence often cross our desires, but still they carry on God’s unchangeable decree, that He declared for all eternity. “Many shall be… made white” (Daniel 12:10). God lets the waters of affliction be poured on His people to make them white. Therefore murmur not at God’s dealings. His work goes on, and nothing falls out except what He has wisely decreed from eternity. Everything shall promote God’s design and filfill His decree.
Every day the news shocks me. I read the news too much, I suppose. I don’t know why I’m shocked when I read about current events regarding abortion, Christian persecution and the general spiritual decline of our world because IT IS WRITTEN that these times would come. I can’t imagine how much worse it can get before Jesus comes back but I know that it will get worse.
It’s hard to imagine that the world we live in right now would be comforting to any Christian so when I first read this passage, I didn’t relate well with it. But I slowly began to recall when troubling times brought on rapid spiritual growth. Recently my husband and I stood up for Biblical Truth against a large group of people, some of whom were our friends. We were heartbroken over the situation and one day he said to me, “What an honor it is for us to be able to be persecuted.” I have never looked at it like that but I believe that day was when healing began for us.
Here is the whole Scripture from above: “Many will be purified, cleansed, and refined by these trials. But the wicked will continue in their wickedness , and none of them will understand. Only those who are wise will know what it means.” (Daniel 12:10)
